In today’s competitive job market, experience is often the differentiator that sets candidates apart. As a marketing student, gaining practical marketing experience not only enhances your resume but also equips you with invaluable skills that can propel your career forward!

But how and where can you gain experience if you’re already struggling to pass your exams? Don’t sweat it, here are my tips:

Internships: Your Gateway to Practical Knowledge

Marketing internships are a vital bridge between classroom learning and real-world application. You can easily gain experience by offering your marketing mojo to local businesses or startups, you can help with social media, content creation, or running campaigns. This will help your skill building process and you’ll also develop a sweet portfolio in the meantime. Not bad, if you ask me.

Join Student Organizations and Clubs

Active involvement in marketing-related student organizations and clubs can provide valuable networking opportunities and hands-on experience. Participate in club activities, workshops, and events to expand your knowledge and skill set. For example, have you checked if your university has a Junior Enterprise? They’re student-run organizations that provide consulting services to SMEs. Joining one can be a great way to gain marketing experience and it even help you during the job hunting process.

In fact, according to Wikipedia, 78% of JE Europe alumni find a job immediately after graduation, compared to 66% of other students who have taken entrepreneurship education courses and 59% of students who have not received any entrepreneurship education.

Volunteer for Nonprofit Organizations

An excellent way to gain marketing experience while making a positive impact in your community is to volunteer for a nonprofit organization. Nonprofits often rely on volunteers to assist with marketing and fundraising efforts, providing opportunities for you to contribute your skills and expertise. To get started, look for organizations whose missions resonate with you and offer your assistance in areas such as event planning, social media marketing, and donor outreach.

Networking: Connect with Industry Professionals

Networking is a crucial aspect of building a successful marketing career. Attend industry events, conferences, and seminars to connect with professionals in the field. Engage in meaningful conversations, exchange contact information, and follow up with individuals you meet to nurture relationships. Building a strong professional network can open doors to mentorship opportunities, job referrals, and valuable insights into the industry.

As an alternative, if you don’t feel like being that social, start by connecting with peers and like-minded people on Linkedin (speaking of which, you can start by connecting with me!).

Create Your Own Projects

Take initiative and create your own marketing projects to showcase your creativity and initiative. Whether it’s launching a blog, organizing a marketing campaign for a local business, or conducting market research on a trending industry topic, self-initiated projects demonstrate your passion and commitment to the field. Document your process, results, and lessons learned to add to your portfolio and impress potential employers.

For example, you can start your own blog or TikTok account in the niche you prefer!

Continuously Learn and Adapt

The field of marketing is constantly evolving, with new trends, technologies, and strategies emerging regularly. Stay ahead of the curve by continuously learning and adapting to changes in the industry. Take online courses, attend workshops, and read industry publications to stay informed and expand your skill set. Demonstrating a willingness to learn and adapt showcases your dedication to professional growth and career development.
